Dinner in York

During our April 2026 trip we are taking a day trip from London to York to visit the National Railway Museum. We are planning to visit the museum in the morning after our arrival around 10:00 and we have reservations for tea in the Countess of York railcar at 1:15.
I have a list of possibilities for after the museum depending on how much time and energy we have:
(Lucky cat shop/cat trail,
York minster,
Walls,
Museum garden,
Shambles)
Looking for suggestions for dinner prior to our 7:30 train back to London.
Also, any thoughts on what you would choose for the late afternoon if you could only do one.

Thanks in advance.

Hi dohm -

Check out The Refectory, Rustique or The Guy Fawkes Hotel for evening eats. All good.

Just one? I’d tour the Minster, or maybe attend Evensong, killing two birds with one stone. As a second option I’d walk the city walls - I’m not sure what time they close in April, but normally it’s around dusk, which, in April, would be into the evening. So you might be able to do one and a bit of the other!

But there are tons of things to do in York, I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful trip!

When we were in York a couple of years ago, we ate at Tasca Frango at our B&B host's recommendation. It was so good we returned for dinner on our last night in York. It's small plates with a Portuguese vibe. Reservations are suggested.

We also loved Rustique, a French bistro. Reservations are probably necessary for dinner, but we slipped in twice for extraordinary lunches. Moules in cream - so so good. My mussel-avoiding spouse couldn't quit eating them!

Thank you Ian and Jane for the dinner suggestions. The Rustique menu looks yummy.
I will look into visiting the Minster as I would hate to miss it while we are there.
Feel like spying out a few cats along the way would also appeal.
It was my daughter's request to visit the Railway museum as she is a huge train buff and this is our first trip outside of London but I would love to have a wish list as a reason to come back to see more of York and Yorkshire!

If you're taking the 1930 back to London that won't leave you much time for a three-course restaurant dinner.

Sadly, the restaurant we hit in York for Sunday Dinner has closed, so I’m not useful on that. But If you only have time for one sight, it’s gotta be the Minster. Gotta.
