Dinner in York

We have pen pals we met in London 18 years ago that we will be meeting for dinner in York one evening in September. They live in Harrogate and we live in Ohio, USA. Any suggestions for restaurants would be appreciated.

We haven't been to York in quite a few years, but one of our favorite restaurants was there. Check it out on Yelp or Trip Advisor, or do an internet search to be sure it is still open and still good.

It was Gert and Henery's. Located in a half-timber building just outside the market in central York. It served traditional English fare. I LOVED their roast beef with potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Hubby said their fish and chips were among the best he'd ever had. Once I had a sautéed chicken breast with herbs when their were out of the roast beef- it was excellent, too. They would bring some homemade tablet (a kind of butterscotch fudge) with the bill- yummmmmm !!!!!!!

I liked Drake's Fisheries. Cozy little place in the back of their up front take out area.

Thanks for the recommendations. Wish there was a menu to view but both sound delicious.

If you want something a little bit different, try Ambiente Tapas, at 14 Goodramgate (the location we visited last year), or their new location at 31 Fossgate. The restaurant was recommended by our B&B owners, who said they go there frequently. The food was excellent, with a wide variety to suit just about any taste. They are also very passionate about sherry there, and love to help you find one you'll like. We each ordered a "flight" of sherries after discussing with our server what types of wines we liked, and discovered two new favorites. You can check out the menu on-line.

I second Mary. I was there last September and the food was fantastic, the waiters VERY helpful in choosing my sherry for me. I liked the first experience there so much I went back the second night. Get a reservation.....they were turning people away at Goodramgate.
