Difference in cost of advance purchase train tickets and day of use purchase

According to RS it looks like an easy train ride from Edinburgh to York. From there we head to Conwy, Wales. It looks like the train station there is also right in the middle of town. So I'm thinking we take the train for those first two legs of our journey. I want to buy the train tickets in advance but I wonder what if, after we get there, we want to leave York in the evening instead of in the morning? How much more are the train tickets if you buy them the day before or the day of travel than 30 days out? Thanks

Tickets labelled Advanced ,might be 1/3 or less than travel on the day tickets.
They are limited to the exact departure time on the ticket, no flex.

Off Peak tickets do allow flex on departure time on the DAY of travel on the ticket after 9.30am.
Off peak tickets cost the same whether bought a month in advance or on the day.
Your are right York station is about 100yds from the city walls, maybe a half mile to the Minster.

Yes, the train station is right in the middle of Conwy. Don't forget to remind the conductor that you wish to get off in Conwy.

The cheapest rail ticket on offer from York (YRK) to Conwy (CNW) is £21 advance purchase for a specific train (all require at least 1 change). Looking 6 weeks out, you will find plenty at this price. The dearest you can pay is £60.60 for a pay on the day turn up & go on any train. However, should you do this, you can save slightly by buying separate leg tickets for YRK > MANchester (£26.50 any train) & MAN > CNW (£30.90 any train).

Buying a ticket today for 'Tomorrow', I could find fares as low as £31 for the 8.57 from York to arrive Conwy at 12.52 or the 15.57 from York to arrive Conwy at 19.52.

Why not drive? I understand the ease of train travel (well in the UK this is debatable..don't mention wrong type of snow or leaves on the track these are standard jokes in the UK)

Driving you can see so much more stop off enroute and to be honest from Edinburgh to Wales is probably a really great road journey as it's down the M74 through Scotland down to the M6 same motorway just changes name on entering England so you would drive through the Lake District wow amazing journey and you could easily do it in one day if you weren't stopping over anywhere...

If you need a third day of train travel, then a 3-day BritRail Flexipass at $285 per person could be a convenient choice, with no reservations required. Otherwise, you're on the right track with the links above. If you're not committed, don't choose the deepest "Advance" discounts.

Thanks for all the good advice. We just want the experience of riding the train. I think we'll take the train from Edinburgh to Penrith and then rent the car to go to Conwy and then to York and back to Edinburgh. With lots of stops on the way.
