Delays on the M6 between junction 32 and 33 near Preston

Bridge reconstruction work is happening on the northbound side (only) of the M6 between Junctions/Exits 32 and 33 for September and October.

Today, the first full day of the work, there have been delays of up to an hour with up to 12 miles of queuing traffic.

So this is just a heads up for anyone driving to the Lake District or Scotland to allow more time for your journey. You can try the parallel old A6, but that is likely to become traffic clogged as many others will have the same idea.

The delays seem to have settled down at least during the week. Out and about the last few days I have seen warning signs suggesting a 10 minute delay - a nuisance but not worth making route changes for.

I suspect that longer delays will be about at the weekends though, especially if the weather is decent. The motorways around Preston are always a bottleneck at weekends and holiday times as a lot of traffic to the Lakes, Scotland and Blackpool all merge together briefly.

The A6 will never be a sensible solution if traffic is congested as it's the obvious alternative. I could provide three more convoluted alternatives but they would not be for people unfamiliar with driving on small country roads. They wouldn't save any time either but they are much more interesting than crawling up the M6.
