Has anyone done Rick's suggestive side trips to Glastonbury/Wells (1 day) and Stonehenge/Salisbury (1 day) out of Bath by bus and/or train? Of course we can rent a car for convenience out of Bath for these side trips but looking for less stressful and costly options so any input would be appreciated.
I would just get a bus to Wells.
Glastonbury is ghastly.
Salisbury and Stonehenge- half hourly train to Salisbury- then the Bus from outside Salisbury Railway Station- https://www.thestonehengetour.info/
Note that you can buy 3 types of ticket- bus only, bus and Stonehenge Admission (at a discount to the normal price) and Bus/Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral Admission fee- at a £3.50 discount to the usual Cathedral price- to be used either the same day or either of the two following days.
So the three part ticket may be useful.
Thank you. May I ask where you purchased the ticket options?
Glastonbury is not up to much though Wells is OK and has a lovely moat around the Bishop’s Palace.https://www.wellssomerset.com
Salisbury by train & then shuttle bus to Stonehenge is an easy day trip from Bath. On returning to Salisbury - be sure to see the wonderful medieval cathedral before catching a train back to Bath.
Also consider going to Cardiff - about an hour by train with direct trains at hourly intervals (half hourly if you change at Bristol).
You won't have time to see all 4 castles in the Cardiff area but could certainly see >https://www.cardiffcastle.com/
This could be combined with a visit to the waterfront - which is 1 mile south of the Central station/shopping area - number 6 bus runs about every 15 minutes from the south side of the library. https://www.visitcardiffbay.info or you could catch a ferry from Bute Park which is just west of Cardiff Castle.
If going to Cardiff - avoid event days - Taylor Swift is 18 June 2024. https://www.visitcardiff.com
I'm assuming you've already looked at Madmax tours out of bath. They are really wonderful. Salisbury is a wonderful and easy day trip by train. I recommend booking the tower tour in advance.
Thank you. May I ask where you purchased the ticket options?
On the website link above, in the left hand side bar (or at least it is located there on my laptop) there is an option 'Buy Tickets'
When we stayed in Bath last year, we did a half day to Stonehenge with a private tour guide (https://www.bathinsidertours.co.uk/). Daniel was fantastic and absolutely helped with recommendations for restaurants prior to our arrival. It was a bit pricey, but the personalization was fantastic and I know we appreciated the site more than we would have on our own.
We did a trip via train ourselves another day to Salisbury to see the cathedral (we did the tower tour) and to walk around the town. We took the 9:36 am train so we would be at the cathedral in time for our 11:15 am tower tour. We got back to Bath late afternoon and had time to relax and have a round of pints before a ghost tour.
We saw the signs for the bus to Stonehenge outside of the Salisbury train station, so definitely you could do it all in one day. Personally, that is not our travel style so we split it up into two separate activities over two days.
It’s been years, but we used Bath as a base for about 5 days. Days trips were to the Cotswolds (Tetbury/Bourton on the Water/Bibury), Cardiff/Tintern, Stonehenge/Salisbury, and Glastonbury/Wells/Cheddar. We did have a vehicle as we went to Cornwall afterwards.
Problem solved.

(Jill had already mention MM above)
Just to mention that London is also a daytrip
I'll third the recommendation for MadMax tours.
They are operated in small vans so no big bus or crowds. I've done a few with them and enjoyed them all.
