We'll be in Lancaster for a couple of weeks in March and I'm looking for easy day trips by train from there. Besides York and Liverpool, any other suggestions? Thanks.
Go to www.nationalrail.co.uk & put in for these journeys from Lancaster (LAN): (If you are up early, choose Today but also choose tomorrow. In most cases you will find that Tomorrow prices can be significantly reduced compared to buying on the day. So, try & buy tickets for intended trips at least 1 day before the trip but still gives you time to get an idea of what the weather will be like).
Edinburgh (EDB) can be done for £35.20 return (buying for tomorrow) = 2 hours 14 minutes.
Windermere (WDM) = £14.80 return (paying on day) = 40 minutes. (Windermere is the gateway to the Lake District National Park).
Chester (CTR) = 1 hour 15 minutes.
Glasgow (GLC) can be done for £23 return (buying in advance) = 2 hours.
You may be able to beat these prices by buying well in advance but that will tie you down to specific trains on days when the weather might not be good.

On some journeys, you may get cheaper prices by splitting the ticket - providing the train stops at the split point. Check here to see if this works out cheaper for planned journeys:http://www.splityourticket.co.uk
