Day Trip to Duxford Air Museum

Is a trip to the Imperial War Museum in Duxford doable as a day trip from London or should one stay overnight? What would be the best transportation option from London? Thanks.

rome2rio.com will answer your question. Looks like it's a 3 to 4 hour journey, whether by bus or train.

Norma, Thanks for the tip about rome2rio. Very handy site.
Geor, Due to distance and time to Duxford we'll do the one you suggested in northern London. Did not know about it's existence. Thanks.

Duxford is certainly not "three to four hours". Maybe you found a different place with a similar name.

You can get from London to Cambridge in less than an hour by train. Access by public transport to the museum itself is a bit difficult though - there is a bus on Sundays only here but on Mon-Sat you'd need to get a taxi.

Go with Philip.

I always take any Rome 2 Rio guess as just that - a decent algorithm but no human input and no local knowledge.

Train to Cambridge is a piece of cake, then a taxi is easiest. Nowhere near 3 or 4 hours.

Duxford is really the bee's knees. Colindale is good, and I like it very much, but I'll tell you it doesn't even travel on the same bus as Duxford.

Be aware that the American hangar at Duxford has been under reconstruction.

Whilst I wouldn't recommend it if you are not prepared to drive, provided that you do the drive out of the rush hours, Liverpool St Stn area to Duxford is less than 2hrs drive. Once you can get on to the M11, it's a direct motorway route there, all the way.

Duxford is very doable in a day from London by train. We caught the train at Kings Cross on a Saturday. Caught a local bus to Duxford virtually over the road from the Cambridge station which dropped us right at Duxford. That was in 2008. Not sure of bus timetable now. 'Google' bus to Duxford

Appreciate all the good insights. Lots of food for thought as we finalize our plans as we will definitely be doing it by rail. Many thanks to all of you.
