Day Trip South of London end of October

My husband, daughter and I are going to head out for one day south of London, thinking of going to Dover and Dover Castle. Any suggestions for stops on the way?

Canterbury
Old city, cathedral, walls. More to see than in Dover.

Winchester
Brighton
Canterbury
Tumbridge Wells
Leeds Castle
Sissinghurst
Hever Castle
Rye
Lots to explore, but would not put Dover on that list!

I hate to say it but I agree. Dover would be low on my list. I hesitate because I feel they need all the tourist dollars they can get.

I agree with all the suggestions but I think Dover is a 'worth' it destination. The town was just 'average' but I really enjoyed the castle. If you move fast you could do both Canterbury and Dover in the same (long) day.

I liked Dover better than Canterbury because Dover Castle is an actual castle intended for defense, rather than being changed to a palace like the Tower of London.

Why choose between Dover and Canterbury? We did Dover Castle, looped around into Canterbury and went to an evensong at the cathedral. Then, ended with a few pints and some grub at a great pub. Very worthwhile day trip.

Hi from Wisconsin,
Jay MN has it correct. Canterbury and Dover. I usually don't want to move that fast, but both in a day is doable. Hitler wanted to rule England from Dover castle. Dover is a one horse show, as is Canterbury. Canterbury businesses have been living off its cathedral for hundreds of years, and things only got better for their tourism business with the in-cathedral-murder.
