Can anyone please recommend a good day trip from York England?Within 2-2.5 hours by train would be optimal. Thank you
What time of year are you travelling and do you want cities, countryside or coast?
2.5 hours from York by train covers much of England and some of Scotland!
I'd go to Edinburgh - Waverly station is in the thick of it and couldn't be easier than from York. Walk the Royal Mile, tour the castle, relax in the gardens and hike around Calton Hill.
What about Durham? The cathedral is magnificent and the town is lovely to explore.
Also, maybe think about Berwick-on-Tweed. I haven't been, but I always eye it on my way north and think, hmm, I should go there someday!
Also, if you're using public transit, think about a Day Tour or check buses. You can get to Castle Howard pretty easily and it's quite nice. Here are some to check out: Grand Yorkshire, Yorkshire Day Tours, and BOB Holidays. I find that day tours are great to get me where the trains don't go.

I would go to Durham.
Thank you everyone for the great suggestions! We really appreciate your input. Traveling very soon.
A very easy day trip from York is Fountains Abbey - one of the more beautiful abbey's in England IMHO!
