Day trip from London to Salisbury/Stonehenge

Hello, we are planning a trip from London Waterloo to Salisbury for a day during the last week of April. It looks like we can take the train to Salisbury and then take the Salisbury Reds Stonehenge bus.

We have two questions:

  1. Do we need to buy tickets for either the train or the bus ahead of time? (If possible, we’d like to hold off getting tickets so we can have some flexibility to account for weather.)
  2. Is there anything else about this excursion that we should know, that we wouldn’t know from reading the websites?

Thanks so much!

You can save ££ if you book now (or soon) and get Advance tickets—-which are limited to the day and train you pick. The Advance price for a mid-week day in the lat week of April is around £23-26 for a return trip, departing in the morning and returning in late afternoon the same day. If you wait til the day of travel to buy, you will pay £50-52 for the Anytime Day Return ticket.

I see no price advantage to buying the Salisbury Reds bus tour in advance—it seems to be £38.50 every day for the bus + Stonehenge entry.

  1. I don't think there is anything you need to know other than what is on the website. I've taken the shuttle out to the stones several times (before Covid) and it was so easy. They run a short DVD on the bus and then at that time the driver got off at Stonehenge and purchased entry tickets for us. Not sure if that is still how they do it or not, so check. Do allow yourselves time to get off at Old Sarum for an hour or so (the bus driver will tell you the next pick up time). If you are early risers, I'd try to get to Salisbury to meet the first bus out to the stones so you can have time at the end of the day to also visit Salisbury Cathedral.

If you are an English Heritage member (or hold a EH Overseas Visitors Pass) you can also just buy a bus ticket for the pure transport element of the trip, from Salisbury.

Thank you, Lola, Pam, isn31c for your helpful replies- which lead me to my next question:

I am trying to buy the train tickets in advance, for which I need to create an account, but when I enter my address, I keep getting the error message, “Country should be United Kingdom.” I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Should I enter my hotel address to get around this?

Thanks, again, for your help!

Which train company website are you using to purchase the train tickets?

It’s South Western Railway. Is that right, or should it be a different one?

South Western is the right company. I have just created an account with them (which I don't normally need) to check it out. You don't need to fill in the postcode box (zip code to you), and therefore the address boxes- just blank them out. Or at least that is so on the website, I assume the app is the same.

You would only need an address if the tickets were being mailed to you.

Any rail company can sell any tickets- so if you continue to have problems use the LNER website/app- which we know works well for overseas visitors.

Will you be traveling with a smartphone? It may be easier to buy on the app and then you'll have your tickets there and available.
