Definitely Windsor. Easy day trip from London. The castle is amazing and the towns of Windsor and Eaton are fun to explore.

I'd agree Windsor as the easiest of the day trips. I do like both Oxford and Bath as well, but I feel both deserve at least one night.

Hi! Most would be good places to visit though probably not Dover since not much there and it has seen better days!

If you'd like to let us know the type of things you like to do and visit happy to throw in a few suggestions!

Bristol is probably the most different on your list - it's a vibrant, arty city with an interesting history and a variety of interesting sites and museums.

I’d go for Oxford. More to see than Windsor but still easy to get to.

without knowing anything about what you hope to find and experience, I'd say the best place is Cambridge - many different kinds of things to do.

Oxford or Cambridge

Edit: if fans of the series Call the Midwife train to the Chatham Historic Dockyards in Kent. Then visit this museum.

If thristy the traditional Cannon pub is close to the Royal Engineers Museum. Small traditional pub. Check opening hours.

Thank you for the input! I purposely did not include our preferences, because I wanted unbiased feedback of YOUR favorites and WHY. Thank you to those who provided those responses.

Of your list I would have Bristol at the top, although it's at the edge of where I would go for a day trip.

But I would have Greenwich above all of them. It's still really in London but I would regard it as a day trip as there is easily enough there to fill a full day - Cutty Sark, Maritime Museum, Old Royal Naval College and especially the Painted Hall, Royal Observatory and Greenwich Meridian, food and craft markets and lots of pubs. Get there by boat on the river and come back by DLR or vice-versa.

I haven't been to Winchester, and it's been a half century since I was in Dover, but I love all the other locations, which I'd say all warrant a night or two. Given Windsor is the closest and easiest to get back to if you want more another time, I'd say Windsor.
We did a day trip to Canterbury last year and I really wished we had an overnight to have more time to visit more museums and maybe take in evensong.

Windsor is the easiest. Cambridge and Oxford have lots to offer.

Don't discount Dover. I spent nearly an entire day at Dover Castle because there was so much to see.

Decades ago, on one of my first trips to the UK, i did a day trip to Bath. I enjoyed it but have been back numerous times. Its worth more than a day.

Canterbury is interesting but other places on your list are higher on my preference list.

I haven't spent much time in Bristol and surprisingly, to me, I have yet to visit Winchester.

Windsor is probably the easier one, like others have said. If your trip involves Heathrow, Windsor is a stone's throw away, so it's very convenient to get to.

The other places are lovely options, although I haven't been to Dover, Winchester, Cambridge, or Bristol yet (that said, I'll be seeing Winchester and Cambridge this year, so I'll report back).

I'd also add Brighton, because it's very easy and close by. I enjoyed the Pier and the Pavilion, among other things. Some other options are Bletchley Park to see the breaking of the enigma codes from WW2, Blenheim Palace, or York (though it is pretty far, there is a fast train).

Like someone else mentioned, Greenwich is good for an inter-London day trip. I went there just before New Year's Eve in 2023. If you can fit in Hampton Court Palace or Kew Gardens, those are great options too.
