Day trip from Bath - my recommendation

Hello fellow travelers

I traveled west of London without a car, so used Bath as a home base for travel in the area. As recommended in the Rick Steves England guidebook, I booked a day trip from Bath, with MadMax tours. We covered a lot of ground, with diverse sites - the beauty and charm of two Cotswold villages, Castle Combe and Lalock Abbey, as well as ancient standing stone sites at both Stonehenge and Avebury. Each location unique and well worth visiting. Perfect pace, smaller group. The van smaller this those huge buses, holding a maximum of 12 or so (plus or minus). Good value for price! Stress-free. No way I could've covered this territory, so thoroughly and beautifully, without MadMax,

Our guide, Andy, was fabulous -- lots of great information, with a sense of humor. I'm so glad I did this; would highly recommend!!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I love Mad Max tours, too. On my tour I discovered my money belt was no longer around my waist under my skirt. The guide called my R. Steves' guide who went up to the room and found it and called the Mad Max tour guide back so I would know I could have a wonderful day with no worries. It was SO kind of both the guides.

I decided to use Bath as a base since it was more compelling as a location for what interested me—Roman baths, Bath Abbey and afternoon tea at Montagu Mews at the crescent hotel, Oxford may also have interesting day trips—I didn’t research that. Hope you have a wonderful time!!

Thank you for the recommendation - my family is planning a trip to England next year and have been talking about staying in Bath for a few days and finding a tour of the Cotswolds. Did you feel like you had enough time in each place? Their tours seem to cover a lot of ground.

The day trip from Bath started at 8:30 am and returned us at about 5:45 pm. Yes, it covered a lot of territory, four locations, but with sufficient time to get oriented and appreciate each site. Would I have liked to stay longer at each site? Yes, but the only way to spend more time is to rent a car and travel on your own schedule. It’s a decision you’ll have to make—according to your schedule, budget and preferences.

We just returned from our trip and did both tours with MadMax, Cotswolds and Stonehenge. It all comes down the guide. Cotwolds, guy dropped us off in the towns and we walked around and met back to be picked up, this was our first tour with them. The rain in the afternoon didn't help the day. We then we did to Stonehenge and more tour, guy got out, and walked us through parts of the town giving all the history and taking photos of us in a couple places- Wow, it was beyond anything we could have imagined. We also lucked out as heavy rain was only while we were in the vehicle, only sprinkles in a couple stops. It all comes down the the guide and there is no way to control that, we were very thankful the excellent tour was the second tour as we would have been very disappointed if it was the other way around.
