Can you use the same pound notes in England and Northern Ireland?
Are you starting your trip in England? Get your Bank of England pound notes there, and use them in both places. Increasingly, credit cards are the way to pay for most things in the UK.
English bank notes can be used in both England and Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland also issues its own bank notes but you may find that places in England aren't happy to accept them. So do try and spend then before leaving Northern Ireland or exchange then for English notes.
I second the thought that you will need very little cash
So essentially what you're saying is get English pounds, then you wont have to worry, right?
I asked this question because when I have been to Scotland, they wanted Scottish pounds. There were times when they wouldn't accept the English pounds.
As always thanks for the advice!
I find it hard to believe that people didn't want Bank of England notes in Scotland. Maybe you're confusing it with the other way around? It's not unknown for notes from Scottish banks to be refused, or at least given a second look, in England.
Edited to add, I second everyone's advice of not trying to spend Bank of Ireland notes in England btw. They would get even more looks or possible refusals in England than Scottish notes.
Edited to add again; Bank of England £50 notes are the only thing that may raise an eyebrow in Scotland. People are wary of fifty pound notes in general, and forgeries are most likely to be Bank of England notes.
It's maybe a little off topic, but I think it's good advice in general not to land with a large amount of cash in fifties. Fifty pound notes are a bit of a pain to spend, even leaving aside what I talked about above. Small businesses in the UK probably run smaller floats in their tills than they do in the US, especially these days as fewer and fewer people are using cash. Changing a fifty can be a real pain for smaller businesses like a small shop or quiet pub.
It has been known in England for the notes issued by the Danske Bank to get confused with Danish currency.
If you are withdrawing from an ATM in Northern Ireland operated by a bank that issues their own notes they are likely to be what you get.
From other operators it can be from who they bank with themselves, or just any mixture which could include some Bank of England notes.
There are some ATMs that are signed to only dispense BoE notes but these are mostly at ports & airports.
I had to look up who were issuing banks in Northern Ireland. Ulster Bank came to mind after I posted last, but I'd never heard of Danske Bank tbh.
I haven't seen an Irish note for years. I remember a long time ago getting quite a large amount in Bank of Ireland notes selling cars at the auction in Glasgow. There were a lot of people buying cars for export to Ireland there.
