Cumbria Coast Rail Line Blocked

The Cumbria Coast Railway line is currently blocked between Workington and Carlisle due to a bridge which has been damaged by the winter storms- a river bridge which has apparently been scoured out.
Bus replacements are in place for all services which will add one hour to journey times. The bus replacing the last train of the night from Carlisle for stations south of Workington (at 1909) will call at all stations to Preston- a 7 hour journey, up to 3 hours longer than normal. Passengers for this service for stations south of Millom should route via Lancaster. There is a temporary route relaxation in force.
Later short journeys to Whitehaven will run as a bus throughout to Whitehaven.

[EDITED- Date pushed back from Easter into April]. The closure is expected to last until at least 15 April.

Journey planners are slowly being updated.

Most journeys will be by coach-bus but some late night journeys are on a citybus.

Note that all cheap Advance fares for local travel on the line, and longer distance journeys using the line have now been withdrawn until the work is completed. This is to suppress demand for the replacement bus services, as there is only finite bus capacity. Bus operators from Lancashire and Manchester are already assisting with the operation.

This may become a very prolonged closure due to the location of the incident.

The line will re-open well ahead of Schedule on Monday 25 March, thankfully.

However there is now a line closure until at least 8 April between Lancaster and Barrow- after a train derailed today when a sink hole opened up in the tracks, as it passed over, in the dark. All persons on board are safe and unharmed.

The exact cause of the hole needs to be investigated and then the hole needs to be filled in.

Both issues have been caused by the severe weather this winter.
