There is a new You Tube Channel which may interest people- about the less well known history of Cumbria and the Debateable Lands of the Borders-https://www.youtube.com/@CumbriaBordersHistory/videos
There is also an associated facebook page, chock full of really good stuff- yesterday it was the anniversary of the Battle of Hell Beck (Gelt) which is one example of the fascinating but little known and very complex history in the area- https://www.facebook.com/BordersCumbriaHistory
The River Gelt is really lovely walking country, near Brampton (Cumberland) and not at all far from Hadrian's Wall. But only really known to locals.
It might encourage people not just to come for 2 or 3 days for the best known parts of the Wall, or even to walk the National Trail end to end- but explore the other history close to the wall. Most importantly to grasp that the end of the wall at Bowness on Solway is a totally false ending, and that the wall was not an isolated defensive structure but totally integrated into the rest of Roman Britain.
That the defensive structures continued way past Bowness on Solway, down the coast to Ravenglass and then into and through the heart of the Lake District.
I would love everyone who goes to Hexham and Haltwhistle, and the big sites up on the wall, even to go the 3 miles east of Hexham to Corbridge for instance.
