Cruise from Southhampton

What would be the best way to get from the cruise ship port in Southampton to Heathrow? How long would you expect the trip to take?

Your cruise line probably offers a bus (coach) transfer, which would be the simplest and quickest way to go. The drive would take at least an hour, more if there's much traffic. My experience (not with Southampton) has been that disembarking time is tied to the bus service, earlier for those with earlier flights and later for those with later flights. You can arrange this before or during the cruise.

I guess a simpler and faster way would be a car service with your own driver, but it would cost a lot more, so not "the best way" in my book.

I just take the National Express Coach. Easy and inexpensive. Take a taxi to the coach station (5 min) and the coach to Heathrow,.

As Carol NR says just take National Express. They take 2 hours and run every 2 hours. There is a very conveniently timed bus at 0945 then 1145 and 1330, etc
The driver just puts your luggage into the hold of the bus.
The ride costs £20 or less and calls at each Heathrow Terminal.

Exactly the same service as the cruise line will offer, and for a lot less money.
