Crewe Railway Station Closures 2027

During 2027 a lot of engineering work is scheduled for Crewe Railway Station (mainly for station roof repairs), which will affect all services on the West Coast Main Line (London to Scotland), to the East Midlands from Crewe (via Derby), for Chester and North Wales, and the Manchester to Cardiff and West Wales route via Shrewsbury.

Through services to Scotland will be able to be diverted via the so called Independent Lines (a route which avoids the station, although may have to be thinned out). Otherwise there will be a major rail replacement buses programme.

Coming from London to North Wales and Chester it may be that the best route is via Birmingham/Wolverhampton then Shrewsbury.

Details of these buses and of amended rail schedules will be announced much closer to the date.

However, for general planning, these are the currently scheduled dates (derived from public data on the Network Rail website)-

that must have taken hours to compile, you've more patience than me! But even so, things are (currently) not that simple...

A few weeks ago it was discovered the phrase "closed" really did mean "closed" - as in no access to staff facilities, despite around 700 train crew - and the managerial support for them - being based on the station and still being needed during the work! London Northwestern have been throwing resources at crew training for their new service extension to Manchester Airport from December only to announce that this won't now start until after some/all of the work at Crewe is finished - but so far no real info on exactly what trains they will be running, or whether they will bother with the Independent Lines option.

And the local council seemed to have been planning some more road chaos which would have screwed the massive replacement bus service plans.
