Countryside Hiking Maps

I am looking to take a hiking trip to England and/or Scotland next year. I am looking for suggestions on the best map to plan such an excursion. Right now, I'm thinking of walking the Cotswolds and perhaps Dartmoor, but who knows. I love history so I'm really looking for a map that would have historical spots mapped out (medieval and bronze age). What other map features do I need? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Ordinance Survey. Ordinance Survey is equivalent to the USGS in the US. Their maps show everything! Go to to their website to see map sets work for you.

Yes to Ordinance Survey maps. Some of the "paper" map series are available in waterproof paper. The Explorer series scales at 1:25000 and are useful for walking while the Landranger series scales at 1:50000 and are useful for planning. If you buy the paper maps, have a waterproof map case.

The OS maps have a metric grid. Make sure your GPS is set to the proper datum.
