We will be in the Cotswolds in June for 3 nights. We are considering 2 nights in Kingham (or Stow on the Wold) and 1 night in Painswick. Wondering how this sounds to those familiar with the area, specifically, whether it is worth changing hotels for our final night to see another part of the Cotswolds? Thank you!
For my taste , I would stay in or near Stow , and not bother changing hotels , The area is fairly compact and distances between the villages are short . I assume you will have a car .
We spent six nights in the Cotswolds, stayed every night at Chipping Campden (Volunteer Inn). We had a rental car and drove all over the Cotswolds as well as day trips to Stratford Upon Avon, Blenheim Palace and Oxford.
Thank you both for your replies. Yes, we will have a car. Question, did you visit Painswick (or the southwest area), or stay more in the northeast Costwolds area? We have read that Painswick is very pretty, but not sure if it's worth a trip -- or going at all if not staying in that area. Appreciate your thoughts!
And, Steven, I'd love to hear more about your preference for Stow on the Wold, over Kingham? Thank you.
Not a preference , other than that we had stayed in Stow on our first visit , Second time around we stayed in Chipping Campden . To be honest , I didn't see a single place in the Cotswolds , that didn't fit into the storybook dreams one would have about the whole area . A nice place ( among dozens ) to take a walk is , after parking in Upper Slaughter , walk along the River Eye down to Lower Slaughter , and thence to Bourton on the Water . Take plenty of pictures , you will find yourself poring over them for months to come when you return .https://www.google.com/maps/place/Upper+Slaughter,+Cheltenham+GL54+2JF,+UK/@51.906892,-1.7839804,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x487125c3a4a0671b:0xd5933f4ede89cd1d!8m2!3d51.9068929!4d-1.7752256
Thank you for those additional tips, Steven!
Painswick is absolutely a stunning village. We enjoyed our two nights there.
I am not so keen on Painswick - mainly because it has quite a busy road running through it. The best cluster of villages are in the NE Cotswolds:> Chipping Campden (+ Hidcote Manor gardens), Broadway, Snowshill, Stanway, Bourton-on-the-Water, Lower Slaughter.
From any of the above, it is also easy to visit Stratford-upon-Avon and Blenheim Palace - as long as you have a car.
Google the places and look at them on Streetview.
Painswick has a nice garden.
I agree with the immediately previous post, but with full disclosure I am quite biased having grown up there.
Kingham is a village, Stow-on-the-Wold is a busy market town.
We stayed in Painswick for a day and half, we never saw a lot of traffic. It’s a beautiful village. Painswick is well worth a visit, along with Ebrington which is a very tiny village with lots of thatched homes and a great pub.
Hello,
I stayed in a lovely B&B called Shakespeares View while visiting Stratford On Avon, was a beautiful place with amazing views! Highly recommend!
