Cotswolds

Hello,

Pretty exciting - taking my parents to the Cotswolds for four days. My father has been to Europe but my mother never has and her mother my grandmother is from Cirencester. She is beyond excited :-)

We would like to stay in a quintessential small charming/town village. We will have a car to drive around see all we want to see. Is there a consensus best town or area for first timers? Or is it "can't go wrong" type area?

Thanks everyone. So stoked for English pints and showing my parents around beautiful Albion.

As youhave a family connection to Cirencester why not stay there? It’s a delightful town and is a good centre for getting to some of the more attractive Cotswold villages. Within the town there is an excellent museum covering the history of the area, remains of the Roman arena and other buildings, a beautiful church going back to Saxon times, easy drive to the Georgian town of Cheltenham and other areas.

Agree. If you’re taking her to the Cotswolds and that’s the area you want to see, Cirencester is a great place to stay. Very nice town.

Since you’ll have a car, it will be easy to visit some of the charming villages and towns in the Cotswolds such as Chipping Camden, Stow- on-the-Wold, Blockley, Broadway. Castle Combe, Bibury and other Cotswold communities.

Another vote for staying in Cirencester. It is an attractive town with a good range of specialist shops and places for a cup of coffee or a meal. It is an attractive place to explore on foot - have a look at the leaflet here and also the Whereat Trail leaflet. It is also a good centre for exploring the area.

Gloucerstershire Family History Society may be able to help her find information about her mother. The library in Cirencester may also be able to help.

We spent 6 nights in Chipping Campden in 2017 at The Volunteer Inn and used it as a base to see the Cotswolds for two days, then visit Oxford, Blenheim Palace and Stratford Upon Avon.

It was great. We did visit Cirencester and loved it.

Thank you, good people. Cirencester it is. And we will venture all around in the car to see as much of the surrounding area we can. Cheers and Blessings to all!

I'm glad you decided that way. Sounds good to me.

You mentioned that you wanted to stay in a quintessential small charming/town village, Cirencster is not a village. It’s a very nice town. If you want to stay in a village I would recommend Chipping Campden, Broadway, Stow on the Wold or Bourton on the Water.

Good decision RickRick - I'm sure Mum will love her holiday.
