Subject: Cotswold Way – self-guided company or plan it myself?
Hello everyone,
I’m hoping to get some advice from those who have walked the Cotswold Way.
I’m planning a solo walk of the Cotswold Way from Chipping Campden to Bath in late September/early October 2026 as part of a trip to England, and I’m trying to finalize my plans.
Here’s where I am so far:
- My first choice was Cotswold Walks, but unfortunately they were already fully booked for my dates.
- I’ve already contacted Macs Adventure and Celtic Trails and am waiting to hear whether either has availability.
- I’ve also researched Carryabag for luggage transfers, so I think I have that piece figured out if I decide to organize the walk myself.
What I’m trying to decide now is whether to continue hoping one of the self-guided companies can arrange everything for me, or whether I should book the accommodations myself and put the trip together independently.
My biggest hesitation isn’t finding hotels—I’ve already started compiling inns and B&Bs along the route. It’s navigation. I know many people use GPX tracks and apps such as Outdooractive, Komoot, OS Maps, or AllTrails, but I’ve never relied on GPS for a multi-day walk like this.
If you’ve planned the Cotswold Way yourself, was navigation straightforward? Did you ever regret not using a self-guided company?
I’d also love recommendations for:
- favorite inns, hotels, or B&Bs along the route
- memorable pubs and restaurants
- excellent cream teas or tea rooms
- places you wish you’d lingered longer
- anything you wish you’d known before starting the Cotswold Way
If you organized the walk yourself, I’d especially appreciate hearing what worked, what didn’t, and whether you’d do it that way again.
This trip is especially meaningful to me. I had originally hoped to make this walk with my mother, so although I’ll now be walking it alone, finally making the journey feels very special.
Thank you for any advice you can share. I’m hoping to make a decision soon, and I’d love to learn from those who’ve already done it.
