We will be there in the winter. Is this still interesting and pretty enough without all the foliage to take an an entire day away from London? We’re only there a week.
Hmmm. Tricky to say. Be aware that it is dark by 4pm so that limits how much you can see in a day. There’s also a risk of the weather being bad. If it was me, I wouldn’t choose to plan a trip to the countryside in advance at that time of year but instead wait to see what the weather was like. It’s not going to be fun in driving rain and cold. It probably will look quite bleak because there’s very little chance of it being a sunny day.
Just saw your post on Tripadvisor ;) as a non-UK resident i would say you'd still find it interesting, but just be aware there weather and shorter days will limit what you can see and do, while cities have more to do indoors.
The Cotswolds is popular for a reason, but England also has lots of other beautiful areas - my favourite is the South Downs. Have a look at Rye. It's a town rather than a village (hence you're not as exposed to the weather) but is almost ridiculously beautiful and picturesque. It's a very easy train trip from London (about an hour). Lewes is another pretty spot that also has a castle. Likewise an easy train trip from London.
Just bear in mind that the English countryside in winter is (arguably) not as pretty as spring or summer.
Not sure what this aversion to winter is. Anyway, folks still live in the Cotswolds in the winter, right? :-)
Go online and look at pictures of the Cotswolds in December - or whenever you are thinking of going. I think you’ll find that there is plenty of green (evergreens, holly, late roses - and early roses - plus moss and lichen) to enjoy. I adore winter in the UK! (Bonus: depending on what month you go, everywhere will be slathered in pretty holiday bling.)
Also agree about Rye.
It would be helpful to know what you mean by "winter". Could be pretty much any time from now through the end of March.
The villages and towns will still be nice, especially if the Christmas trees are still above shop doors and the lights glowing.
The hills may be more muddy rather than green, but that depends on weather. Weather, as said above, can be all over the place - maybe nice maybe not.
I've spent many a winter in the Cotswolds, having grown up there and with lots of family there, and I love it there. But I'm not sure that I'd send a tourist there for a day in the middle of winter especially if I had to plan in advance. If I woke up in the morning and the weather was warm and sunny - sun is very rare in December, January and February - maybe I'd try to get on a tour. Just my personal opinion.
If never again there would be a chance maybe jump at it regardless.
Thanks all , I think I’ll skip it.
