Costwold itinerary planning

Hello Travelers,

Several of you provided some great feedback of our UK travel plans and now I am looking for some suggestions about how we incorporate Stonehenge (or convince us to skip it).

We will be taking the train from York to Cheltenham on Saturday, September 6th, pick up a car and stay in Stow. We have 3 full days (4 nights) and return the car in Bath before we check into our Bath hotel. After 2 nights in Bath we head to London on the train.

Below is our current list (incorporating prior feedback) and includes Avebury which seems better suited location to our driving adventures because Stonehenge is much farther south. Should we fit Stonehenge into our plans? What would you give up to do that? I am thinking it just adds too much driving but I want to hear your thoughts.

Dinner reservations at The Porch in Stow.
Blenheim Palace, Hidcote Gardens, Giffords Circus in Stratton Meadows in Cirencester
Snowshill, Stanway, Stanton, Slaughters, Bourton-on-the-Water
Berkeley Castle, Oxford & Ashmolean Museum

And if you have other comments, by all means, please offer them up!

Thank you and happy travels.
Gretchen

I have been to England numerous times and have never been to Stonehenge but really enjoyed Avebury. We went on a Mad Max Tour and we were the only ones there.

Just another fan of Avebury and I've seen both more than once. I love that I can walk around the stones, the village is small and charming, you can stop in the pub and there is a great gift shop. All reasons I love Avebury.

I went to Stonehenge for the summer solstice several years ago, and that was absolutely worth it. But I'm not at all sure that it would be worth carving time out of your itinerary for on an ordinary day. They don't let you get right up to the stones, and it is mainly just a photo opp.
