Cornwall base for walking

We are looking at self-guided walking in Cornwall next October for 7 to 10 nights. We like to have a single base and use public trans and occasionally a taxi. HF Holidays bases in St. Ives and it looks like many good short-to-medium/easy-to-moderate walks and hikes are possible from there. We don’t want to use HF Holidays as we prefer the option to cook for ourselves and have the space a holiday let will give us. We also like to take the occasional day off from hiking and explore a small town or two,

Is St. Ives a good base? Any personal recommendations?

My sister and I spent a week last spring in Fowey with no car. We walked somewhere most days, kayaked twice, and used a few taxis to the rail station and Lostwithiel. I had researched using the ferry to Mevagissey and the Lost Gardens of Heligan though we never got around to going. There was limited bus service in April but a bus ran to St. Austell and Looe. We were not interested in doing day trips all over the place, mainly walking and kayaking from our door.
Fowey is a beautiful walkable small town with restaurants and shops. We rented a flat from www.estuarycottages.co.uk Our week was great and we would love to return.
