Convent Garden

I'm going to be staying near Convent Gardens in September. After looking it up on line I can see it would be very easy to get overwhelmed and miss some really good things. If anyone has some advice about don't miss restaurants or shops , etcI would appreciate it. Also is the antique market worth going over for on Mondays.
Thanks,
Sharon

I suggest that you just stroll around. The main layout is in rows so you can be quite methodical. Do watch out for pickpockets. It can get quite crowded. Have a top grade gelato for me. Be sure to visit the ATM first.

There's no "n" at the beginning of the word. Covent Garden.

If you're there over a Sunday, one of my favorites is to go to Hawksmoor Seven Dials and have the Sunday roast beef lunch. A Sunday roast is a traditional English thing and the Hawksmoor has been voted one of the best in London by TimeOut. I've been several times and always enjoyed it. The restaurant is located down a side alley one block away from the main market area...print out a map before you go.

If you like theater, there are several nearby. You can book something in advance or see what's availble at a discount the day of the show. Last year I took my kids to see the Lion King at the Lyceum and really enjoyed it. The Royal Opera is also nearby and may have a production running in September. They also do lunchtime recitals on Mondays (these sell out quickly).

The Transportation Museum is right at the market. It's got a neat collection of old buses, subway cars, etc. It also has a nice clean bathroom. You actually get a one-year membership with your ticket, so you can duck in whenever you'd like during your visit.

There are plenty of good musicians and street performers (they have to audition) that you'll see.

Have fun!

We really like Brown's restaurant in Covent Garden. Reasonable prices, nice atmosphere, and great service. They do a really good afternoon tea that is cheaper than most.

If you've never tried Indian food, you may want to visit one of the Indian restaurants in or near Covent Garden. I recommend Cafe Chutney (34 The Market Building) or Masala Zone (48 Floral St.). Also good are Dishoom (12 Upper St. Martin's Lane) and Moti Mahal (45 Great Queen St.) You can't go wrong with Chicken Tikka Masala or Butter Chicken. Served with rice, curried vegetables and hot naan (bread). Delicious food.

We also like Browns Restaurants. They also have a pre theatre menu of 2 courses for a fixed price. We share and starter and dessert and order our own entre'
