Hi all,
Thanks to everyone for the great tips in these forums! I'm trying to decide the best way to set up riding the tube easily. The contactless Applepay sounds so easy - do I need to register first or will I literally just tap in and out and get the benefits of daily limits, etc? Also - I wanted to set up my phone in advance so I can use maps and do quick on the spot research. I see the 5g for $12.99. Will that work and is it necessary? We're there for 2 weeks. Thanks again!
Contactless pay is really that easy. Each person has their own means of payment, and you just tap in and out on the Tube.
As for a SIM - you would need to specify which one you are looking at. And do you need a SIM or an ESIM?
Yes, tap on and out the same way when you buy something in a shop- very easy. You can also just tap your contactless card itself if you prefer.
5GB for 2 weeks is fine, given how you will be using it. It's not strictly necessary, but can come in very handy for navigation. Note you don't need Internet access to tap your phone and pay for travel or purchases.
Yes, it is that easy! Just note the weekly caps run Monday-Sunday. You can find more info here: https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/find-fares/capping
I would definitely get data, and probably get a bit more than you think you'll need. I use Nomad when travelling to other countries and you can get a lot of data for not very much money. It's very easy to set up (just download the app).
For iPhone users I suggest setting up express transit. No need to wake up and unlock your phone. Just tsp and go like using a physical credit card or oyster card. Apple Watches also have this capability.
