connecting Cambridge to Lincoln to York

Hello - Two adult friends visiting England in October. We will awake in Cambridge and have our next night's accommodations in York. Please give me feedback on feasibility of a stopover in Lincoln (I just have to visit Lincoln Cathedral!). We will not have our own automobile.

Assuming we'd travel by train but open to coach travel if that's better. Combination of train and coach? A long Uber ride? Rick mentioned his use of long Uber rides to connect locations less than one hour apart in a recent media interview ('never occurred to me ). What's the best way to connect these three places?

Cambridge to Lincoln is 2 hours by car, and Lincoln to York is 1:50 (so say 2 hours)- very long Uber rides.

No long distance buses link the three cities.

If you leave Cambridge at 10am, and change at Peterborough onto a direct LNER train you arrive at Lincoln at 12noon.

The 0900 arrives at 1108 with an extra change at Newark Northgate.

Leave Lincoln at, say, 1527, change at Newark Northgate, arrive York at 1728- so almost as fast as the drive.

You don't want to take your luggage up the bruiser of a hill to Lincoln Cathedral, so you will need to find a Stasher or similar.

Or there is a HoHo bus from Station to Cathedral- https://lincolnandbeyond.co.uk/lincoln-open-top-sightseeing-tour-bus/

Thanks for the information. Should we book some train tickets now? Can the whole day's rail journey needs be completed on LNER? Should I buy tickets directly from their website?

You should check the Cathedral is open on your date.
Besides closing for services and other events it holds Lincoln Uni graduations throughout the year and is closed to the public. I’m there for my daughter in September.

Yes book tickets now, to be on specific timed trains.

Cambridge to Peterborough will be on Cross Country Trains, and Lincoln to Newark (if you have to change trains there) is on East Midlands Trains, but the operators don't really matter.

Looking randomly at 8 October Cambridge to Lincoln Off Peak Day Single (so flexible for any train) is £39.10. An Advance Train Specific fare on the 0900 from Cambridge is £13.20 and on the 1000 is £19.40 (**).

Lincoln to York Off Peak Single is £27.70, an Advance on the 1527 is £22.60 so not much saving.

Use LNER if you wish but breaking news today is that Scotrail is now the best site to book any UK rail ticket (assuming that they accept US credit cards). That is because they now offer split ticket savings. Thus the £19.40 fare on the 1000 train is a split ticket- only available on Scotrail. LNER or any other website will charge you £36.30 through Advance Fare for that journey.

It doesn't matter that you are not using a Scotrail train. If you want the 0900 train then book on LNER

There is also the Steep Hill Shuttle which runs every 20 minutes. Timetable here. It is a small white minibus. Catch it from the station and get off at the Cathedral. This saves the very steep (and I do mean very) steep climb up the aptly named Steep Hill. It is £1.50 for a single trip. Either catch teh bus back or walk back down to the station.

As well as the Cathedral, there is also the ruined Bishop's Palace and the Castle too.

The Holiday Inn Express has Stasher for £4.69 a bag per day- which is close to the Railway Station. Stasher just call it Hotel near Lincoln City Centre (Train Station) but you can tell it is the HIE from it's map location.

The Premier Inn also does Stasher, which may be a touch bit closer. same price.
