Hi, We will be in London for 5 days . I read in one of the link that for stay of over 4 days ,a 7 day travel card would be better . I understand that to get this 2-4-1 travel card , it has to be a specific rail station. I am confused as it says to get a 7 days 2-4-1 Travel Card , I cannot do it in an underground or overground rail station so I am not sure where to get it. we are staying close to British Museum ( Newton area). Thanks a lot for your help.
There is no such product called a '2-4-1 travelcard' as such, but any national rail ticket covering the area you are in is valid for the 2 for 1 admission offers in the Days Out Guide (http://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/2for1-london).
Euston would be the nearest National Rail station. Go to the main line station, and ask for a 7-day travelcard for zones 1 and 2. You will need a passport sized photo for the ID card that goes along with the paper ticket.
A couple of weeks ago, I bought an Oyster card at the Heathrow tube station, with 7 days of travel within zones 1 and 2, for about 35 pounds (+ 5 pound surcharge to get from Heathrow to central London locations) so the total was 40 pounds per person. Saves money if you intend to travel by Tube frequently within zones 1 and 2 in a 7-day period. Greenwich is also in zone 2.
(Edit: But see Harold's post below)
If you follow Kent's method, you are NOT eligible for the two for one discounts. If you follow Marco's method, you are. You must be holding a ticket with the National Rail "crows feet" logo (a Travelcard issued by National Rail is fine). An Oyster Card, or a Travelcard issued by TfL is not valid for the promotion - see here: http://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/ticket-types.aspx
On the other hand, if you are not going to use the two for one discounts, it doesn't matter which kind of 7 Day Travelcard you get - they will all save you money.
If you do the 2-for-1 deal, you have to use the tickets the same day you bought the transit ticket from National Rail, right? Just checking.
PT--basically, yes. For the London travel cards, the 2-4-1 offers are good on the days your travel card is good, if you purchased that travel card from a national rail ticket office as stated above. However, if you're using train tickets, say traveling into London from York on a Friday, leaving for Bath on a Monday, then you can use the 2-4-1 offers Friday through Monday by showing both your train tickets. To keep your train ticket to do this, show your ticket to someone at the gate to board the train. Unlike the Tube, train gates swallow your ticket rather than spitting it out on the other side.
