Cotswolds

We are looking to do self-guided walking from one inn (not inn to inn) or Band B in the Cotswalds. Three of us. May 2027. We will be flying into Heathrow, no car.

Just looking for the experiences of others staying in one location in the Cotswolds and walking the trails from that accommodation on our own. Please be kind to a newbie in this site.

We based ourselves in Stow-On-The-Wold for a week. We picked Stow as it was large enough to offer a dozen or so pubs/restaurants to return to after a day of hiking but still charming and low key. Lots of hiking opportunities from the town. We also took the bus and an occasional taxi to other towns in the region for other hikes, as we didn’t rent a car.

I don’t think I wasn’t kind, but apologies if it seemed that way. Specific questions can usually prompt better responses and I was trying to steer you that way.

Find a pub or B&B that you like and get an Ordnance Survey map of the area and off you go.

We are staying in Chipping Campden for a walking holiday. There are several sites that give options for self guided walks from the villages. Here’s one

I actually got an email from the rental company we will be using that highlights their different properties that have good access for a walking holiday. I know you said you are looking at inns and bnbs but maybe this would help to identify a particular village. Here’s the link they provided. Hope this helps a bit

Last March I stayed in Moreton-in-Marsh for six nights. It is not the most charming Cotswold town, but it is absolutely fine. The biggest negative is the traffic through the town, but it wasn't terrible. I chose M-in-M because we did not have a car and it has a train station with easy transport from London and Oxford by train. It also has pretty frequent bus service to a number of villages in the Cotswolds. We stayed in a cottage I found on VRBO. I would do it again.

We did a couple of nice walks from M-in-M on two of our days. On another day, we took the bus to Bourton-on-the-Water, then walked to Upper and Lower Slaughter and Stow-in-the-Wald, then caught the bus from there back to M-in-M. On other day, I took the Secret Cotswolds tour with Go Cotswolds. We went to four villages plus a couple of other sites, and I loved it! (My husband elected to stay in M-inM and do a long run and long nap.) We also took the train to Oxford and spent a day there, which was a lot of fun.

M-in-M has a number of places to stay and restaurants. It also has a grocery store and good fish & chips shop. It's definitely a good place to consider if you won't have a car.

We are not into hiking, for one reason we are in our late 70s.
Still, loved the Cotswolds. We stayed in Chipping Campden at the Volunteer Inn. It was very nice, it has a great pub and Indian restaurant. We stayed six nights and used it as a base to explore the area.

I suggest using Cotswolds Walks. I had an excellent trip last May and they arranged a self-guided part of our trip ( We did a guided tour for the first part of our trip with them, loved it ) They can arrange anything you wish. Local company, amazingly responsive and friendly. Sadly at the end of our self guided part I got sick and they we able to arrange taxis for us. Nice to have someone to assist.
Can’t speak anymore highly of them. Have fun!
