Clothing Chelsea Flower Show

I’m just packing for my Scotland trip. I leave in 2 days. Yes, I’m a last minute packer.

I
At the end if my trip, I have a day in London and have tickets for the Chelsea Flower Show. It says there is no dress code, but I get the impression showing up in hiking pants and runners might be frowned upon.

What have people worn?

You will find blue jeans and shorts among the wide range of clothing at this expensive, sold-out event. No sign of Empire. Glad we went. Long lines for food.

EDIT: Note that there is at least as much outdoors as indoors. So be prepared with sun protection and rain protection(!), and the right degree of warmth.

Thanks Tim. That’s good to know, especially about the long food lines.

Surprisingly, there are still tickets available.

I go most years. Most women wear a summer dress (often with a floral print) and comfortable shoes (white sneakers are ubiquitous, comfortable flats or sandals work too). I pay less attention to the men but I’d say they generally wear something smart casual and summery.

Margaret, I wondered about a dress, but if it is cold, rainy or windy, pants would would suit be more.

Yes, if it is cooler, you could wear trousers. I would opt for something like a tailored navy trouser, a smart blazer or jacket, and a silk scarf - an outfit like that would fit in with the crowd. You could wear something more casual and wouldn’t be turned away, you’d just be on the more casual end of the spectrum for the event. Do note that it gets quite crowded and I can’t imagine trying to navigate with an umbrella so if it’s really raining heavily I would bring a waterproof jacket with a hood.
