chunnel prices

I will be in London next week-plan to go to Paris and rent a car for Normandy and trip through Germany Austria. I am blown away by the prices I am seeing on the chunnel from London to Paris. Last time I was there I remember it being pretty affordable. Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing something and that is that for decent fares you need to book way ahead of time. You have left it very late. See what EasyJet has to offer instead.

It hasn’t been known as the Chunnel for about 20 years! I just returned from France on Sunday and I booked my ticket in January. I paid more this year than I did last year, but booking so last minute in peak season is going to be expensive for you.

The Chunnel train and most all other high-speed trains around Europe use airlines style pricing so the sooner you book the cheaper it will be. Just like with a plane ticket if you price it out at the last minute the fare will be sky-high:(

Maybe a ferry is the answer. It seems the ferry from Dover to Calais still takes foot passengers.

Eurostar. No such thing as a Chunnel Train. Call it that and people will look at you weirdly!!!!

Yes, there is one ferry company that takes foot passengers. The train-ferry-train combo takes a long time and is a real pain, but according to the man in seat 61, at least, last-minute tickets can be had for a lot less than they can on the Eurostar. See here: https://www.seat61.com/London-Paris-ferry.htm

Yet another option would be to take the bus. There are several bus companies that operate that route, including Flixbus, Ouibus, and Eurolines. All are a lot cheaper than the Eurostar for departures next week.

As I understand it, the bus will cross the channel either on the ferry (you have to leave the bus and go to the passenger decks, then rejoin the bus on the other side) or on the Eurotunnel vehicle train. It looks to be somewhat faster than taking the train to the ferry to the train because you don't have to arrange your own transfers between the train stations and the ferry terminals.

Thanks, ok 'Eurostar'. Last time I was in london was 10 years ago and we booked Eurostar to Paris on the fly while we were there. Prices were very reasonable so I was not to concerned this time. BTW signigicant items, air, hotel, rental car were booked well in advance. I may take Easy jet-much cheaper!

I am not in favor of ferries, but at least the ferry to St. Malo goes to Normandy. I personally would not combine Germany with the French coast. But it's your decision to drive that long distance. It sounds like you have the car rental already, and are satisfied with any drop-off charges.

Not only is Eurostar cheaper three months in advance, the departures preferred by business travelers will still be more on the same day you can go for really very little at midday. Don't forget to allow time for immigration clearance before you board the train. There will be airport-style security, and a line for document checks.

The full-fare Eurostar ticket in Standard class has always cost $250-300. What may have been different on other trips was some of the cheaper advance rates not selling out by the time you were ready to purchase.

Actually, the plan after 5 days in London and surrounding was to take the Eurostar to Paris, rent a car to go to Normandy-spend 1 night in Bayeux, see the WWII stuff. and return the car to Paris. Then, we were going to train to Cologne, do the Rhine, and come down to Heidlberg, Rothenburg, Munuch, Inssbruck and Salzburg with rental car. Fly back to London for departure. Its a lot, may have to cut something out. The other option would be to fly to Munich after London, do the trip backwards and end up in Normady-would still need to get back to London for return flight. We are booked on London, plus have hotel in Bayeux and rental car. Ive checked there is availabllity for air options plus hotels and rentals with either option at this point.
