Christmas in London? Good idea? Bad idea?

Because of the way our kids' Winter Break falls this year (off the week before Christmas), we are thinking of trying Christmas in London.

Westminster Abbey will have a service which we could attend on the 25th. I see there are play tickets available and I checked in with a couple restaurants that will be open.

Anyone been to London over Christmas? Thoughts or suggestions welcome! (Maybe a hotel that does a great English Christmas dinner, etc.?)

Thank you!

Be aware that there will probably be no public transport on Christmas Day and limited transport on Boxing Day, some museums will be closed on the 24th, 25th and 26th. As Boxing Day falls on Saturday, Monday is also a Bank Holiday.

Thank you, yes, we are expecting limited service, but are you saying there is NO tube those days?

What is there to do in London on Christmas Day?

Thanks again.

My DH and I have spent several wonderful Christmas seasons in London over the years. Expect no public transport on December 25 and 26. It was a great experience but you must plan around most places being closed and not using the Tube or buses.

We did this trip last Christmas because husband needed some more miles to keep his airline Platinum status. We had a great time but museums being closed for so long is a problem. We went to Harry Potter on the 24th, Westminster Abbey Service afternoon of 23rd-got up at 2:30 AM in Nov to reserve the tickets! Disagree that Queen's speech is most important thing to do Christmas Day-it is Downton Abbey Christmas special-but don't know if they'll have that this year since series is ending. If you like store windows, see them bfore Christmas-they take them down before Boxing Day and I missed seeing some that I really wanted to see.

lyndlamb1, "Disagree that Queen's speech is most important thing to do Christmas Day". You obviously do not yet appreciate the British sense of humour. Emma's statement was 100% irony.

Boxing Day has bus and tube services, but no rail other than airport trains. Don't plan to leave the capital on Boxing Day.

Thank you for correcting me on Boxing Day tube and bus schedule. I had forgotten it was the rail service we had an issue with. it's so worthwhile to go at this time of year if you are prepared and open to the slower pace you can afford yourself.
