Any advice on economically getting from Heathrow into London on Christmas Day? We land at 9ish in the morning. Didn't realize the Tube and buses wouldn't be running on Christmas Day. Thanks!
There is a limited coach service to Victoria Station - see nationalexpress.com, otherwise it will be a taxi. There are no trains or tube service.
It's Christmas Day, pretty much everything shuts down. It's a breath of fresh air and enables people to spend time with loved ones. Not so great for travellers though.
Forget economical. You need to focus on getting a taxi, which will charge extra because of the holiday.
Hello
The car service I use - Suntransfers.com - charges 10 GBP more for a Christmas day transfer. - 76 GBP vs 66 GBP
Can't imagine a major city shutting down like that. How does the working class airport worker get to Heathrow on Xmas day to help service all the flights coming in that day?
Jazz + Travels, different country, different traditions.
For me it’s refreshing to see a major metropolitan City shut down to observe and appreciate Christmas.
My first London Christmas was in the 70’s. I was shocked and yet truly appreciated the quiet. It was a ghost town.
Over the years been back for numerous Christmas days. Much more is open than in the 70’s but compared to Chicago or LA or NYC or Seattle...really a different experience.
I know I've been to the UK several times and worked as pax agent for Virgin Atlantic at Chicago
O'hare on Xmas day; I just can't imagine how people get to work at the airport those jobs that don't pay much.
But only a free flight in first class would entice me to travel on a flight arriving in London on December 25th.
I am so looking forward to being in London on Christmas Day this year. I plan to put on my walking shoes and head to the city center to see the beautiful views and buildings without hoards of people everywhere. I hear that it's virtually abandoned compared to the usual.
It didn't used to be like this; there was some public transport on Christmas Day in London into the 70s. The demand dropped so far that it wasn't covering the cost of people in the ticket offices, let alone anything else. TfL did an assessment of running some kind of bus service a few years back, but considered it too costly.
One word: don't
Do not attempt to travel in the UK on Christmas Day, Boxing Day (26th Dec.) or New Years Day. Do not expect any transport to be running, and double check transport for the days before and after, that may be limited and will be very crowded.
Do not expect any shops, restaurants or other facilities to be open, unless you have checked and booked well in advance.
Except if you have a car, and you know where you are going, and you already have enough fuel in the tank (getting more will be difficult).
This is the way it always has been, so I am surprised anybody would think of arriving on Christmas Day.
Kelly, sorry, it is too late for you, you have already bought your flights, but I am posting this as a warning to others who live in places where this does not apply.
Did you choose this date because it was cheap? Now you know why.
One thing where it might be the case to be wary of the train service - normally between 25 Dec and 2 Jan, but this year from 23 Dec onwards, as the planned engineering work is assuming low travel on Xmas Eve with it being a Monday. However, long distance coaches run all though Christmas including Xmas Day itself. Local transport is generally only off completely or severely restricted on Xmas Day (and New Years Day in Scotland).
I just tried to book a taxi with Heathrow Airport Taxi Service for Christmas morning and it was would be £61.00 to go into London.
Emma is correct - I've landed at LHR on both Boxing and New Year's Day and was fine to take the Piccadilly line to Green Park both days. Getting from the airport into town wouldn't be a problem on those days.
All motorway petrol stations are open on Christmas Day.
If you don't mind giving them your first born child in exchange for a couple of litres of fuel and some dodgy food.

LOL
Just booked a car from Just Airport. The cost isn't too bad when shared between 4 passengers. Thanks for all of the advice!
probably a good choice
