Chester Worth a Short Stop?

My sister and I will be driving on a Wednesday from Conwy to Keswick and I was wondering if people thought it would be worth it to stop in Chester on the way? It would only be for 3 hours or so probably to walk the walls and maybe see the Cathedral. Is it worth it? Does anyone have any other suggestions of places to stop on the way that isn't part of the lower lakes district? Interested in Roman ruins, castle and church ruins. Thanks!

Chester is a better place to spend time than Conwy in my opinion! Parking can be difficult, at the weekends in particular.

Thanks for the advice! So much to think about. We are going to keep Conwy for sure, though. Better location etc... For us.

We enjoyed Chester the two times we were there. The Cathedral is definitely worth seeing. We were there for Evensong on night and that was memorable. They have a fine organ in case someone is playing or practicing. There is a racetrack along part of the city wall and we were lucky enough to be there when a race happened. We enjoyed looking in the shops in the old historical district. I consider it definitely worth a stop.

Loved Conwy and Chester, Keswick not so much (too crowded).

Walking through Conwy castle was grand. It's one of my best memories of the UK.

I guess I'm one of the few people that just didn't get all that excited by the Lake District!

Hope you have a great trip!

Well of course Leslie lives in Montana and is used to much bigger mountains than the Lake District fells! ;-)

We spent most of a day in Chester and loved it. I think three hours would let you see the cathedral and walk along the walls. The cathedral choir stalls have wonderful wood carving. The streets full of half-timbered buildings are also lovely, though full of present-day shoppers. Haven't been to St. John's church but I'd take Emma's advice on her home town.

It would be a long drive to Keswick that day but seems doable. Conwy is also one of our favorite places and a good base for exploring north Wales.

Actually, Dick, it has nothing to do with the mountains that I see daily!

The Lakes District IS quite lovely, no doubt about it. But, for whatever reason, it just doesn't "grab" me the way other places in the UK do. The Cotswolds, yes. Cornwall, yes. Yorkshire, oh my, yes-yes-yes. I could go on and on...

I can't explain it. Dh adores the area and we will, I'm sure, visit it, again, on our next trip. Maybe my next visit will adjust my view!
