Chester Recommendations Please

There is nothing on Chester in the 2023 RS England book; so I am starting from zero planning what to do there this September (I arrive and leave by train so don't have a car). Any suggestions on what are places/events/restaurants (pubs) not to miss? Thanks.

Our suggestions can be more helpful if you tell us a little more about your plans and wishes. How many days will you be in Chester? Where else will you be visiting on this trip and what kinds of things do you most enjoy doing?

Chester is a very compact city and everywhere is easily walkable. The top tourist things are the Cathedral, walk around the walls and possibly the castle. There is also a racecourse.

The Grosvenor Museum has an excellent display of Roman remains. There is also the Deva Discovery Centre which is very much a hands on discovery museum about the Romans in Chester. (Chester was a major Roman settlement and still has the remains of an Amphitheatre.) The Church of st John the Baptist near the remains of the Amphitheatre is also worth visiting.

If you want something very different (and also gory) there is Sick to Death Museum in the now closed St Michael's Church, on Bridge St.

Don't miss the unique Rows in the centre with their two storeys of shops. Chester also has a Town Crier who proclaims at The Cross at 12 mid day.

You can also take a boat trip on the River.

Hi Sherrie! Gladstone's Library is a short taxi ride from Chester and is worth a couple of hours. I believe there is a bus, too. The Cheese Shop in Chester is worth a stop.
