Chartwell visit

I am trying to arrange a day or half=day trip to Churchill's home, Chartwell, on our upcoming visit to London. I am finding sparse information for independent travel. We don't have a car. Is the train a possibility or should I just sign up for a tour? Or hire a private driver for a half day and pinch pennies somewhere else? Any recommendations?
Thank you for your attention.

I had a car when we visited, so can’t help with that, but close to Chartwell is Ightham Mote. It is an medieval moated manor house. Very much worth visiting. My wife and I visited both in half a day.

The National Trust own Chartwell. Their website (nationaltrust.org.uk) details how to get to each of their properties in some detail. It isn’t that close to any rail station, but you could take a taxi from Sevenoaks station. A private driver isn’t necessary IMO.

There are good instructions on the NT’s Chartwell page:

By train Edenbridge (4 miles) and Oxted (6 miles) stations are
accessible from London Victoria and London Bridge. Sevenoaks station
(6 miles) has a regular fast train service from London Charing Cross,
Waterloo East and London Bridge. Oxted and Sevenoaks have taxi ranks
outside to get to Chartwell. You can find out more on theNational Rail
website.

I think Sevenoaks might be the fastest, and as the biggest of these towns it’ll no doubt be the easiest to pick up a taxi from. You might want to get a number from the taxi driver so he/she can pick you up after you’ve finished?
