Cemeteries easy to reach

Some of you may remember my recent post regarding going to Abney Park. I'm in London right now, and managed to get within two miles of the cemetery, after a long trip on public transportation period then it started to pour rain period I got an uber and asked to be taken to the nearest tube station.
This has been a day filled with tube closures, overground rail closures, and misinformation.
Can somebody please tell me how to find a cemetery that has beautiful statues of Angels etc? It does not need to be one of the magnificent seven. I just like to wander somewhere peaceful and take some photographs of the statuary.
Thanks so much!

Can you make your way to the North Sheen rail stop?

If yes from the North Sheen Station walk along Manor Road to Sheen Road. Cross at the light and turn left. Walk past the Courtland Apartments to the entrance at Kings Ride Gate ( it’s a path ) into Richmond Park. There’s the East Sheen cemetary you can access ( at least I did 2022) that does have angels.

Also Look for the tiny signage that reads Granny. Poignant.

The Putney Vale Cemetary and Creamatorium is vast and interesting. I took a bus to get there. Maybe the 85(?) believe I rode the tube from Richmond to Putney then a bus to West Lodge. Remember there was a gas station and convenience station as I bought a bottle of water before entering the cemetary gate.

EDIT: sorry about bus directions. Tis what it is regarding London public transport

I would suggest Mitcham (London Road) Cemetery- train to Tooting or my memory is there is a bus direct from Central London or Sutton Cemetery (train to Sutton Common).
Tooting is 28 minutes from Blackfriars on Thameslink, Sutton Common is the same train but 45 minutes from Blackfriars.

From Lambeth North go south one stop to Elephant and Castle and join the train there.

PS- Re Claudia's suggestion North Sheen is a 25 minute ride from Waterloo

Do you use TFL Go for on the spot instructions? Or Citymapper? I have had good luck with these. (Probably you have used them - it's just not clear from your post. Understandable - very frustrating circumstances, I'm sure!)

Highgate came immediately to my mind for cemetaries. Fairly easy access.

Citymapper usually. It didn't tell me about the closures though.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I would recommend Kensal Green Cemetery. One of the oldest cemeteries and close to the Underground station.

For future reference they have a wonderful tour where I was able to go into one of the chapels and go into the catacombs and see how the coffin was lowered down from the chapel to the underground burial place. The website is below.

My personal apologies for not telling you about the Overground Closure. I didn't appreciate that you were going to Abney Park today. Maybe (no, not maybe, definitely) I should have asked you.

We usually post major tube closures on here (like the Pic Line today), but not overground closures as visitors don't often use the overground. That was a scheduled closure for the whole weekend. The thing was that when the e-mail notification came in you did cross my mind but not knowing your date, ignored the prompt.

I don't know what happened on the Victoria and Bakerloo Lines as they had no scheduled closures today.

isn31c, no need to apologize! There was a fire at one of the stations and that caused "severe delays " on the Bakerloo line. both the Covent Garden and Chating Cross Tube stations were closed.

Thanks, everyone for the suggestions. I'll do some investigating for tomorrow.

Are you going to make it out to Abney Park again? It should be very green at the moment, with all the rain we've had the last week and the mild weather now. It's quite atmospheric. Worth another attempt, maybe the straight shot bus might have been the best bet. It's not particularly easy to reach. That's why Stoke Newington has had some of the best house prices in the area for some beautiful property.

I posted this on another thread, but I'll post it again here. Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black" video was shot in Abney Park and a couple of streets around there - https://youtu.be/TJAfLE39ZZ8?si=7Ssf_4KZGU_Zkd6x

You've seen Nunhead? It's a short walk from Crofton Park station. [edit: closer to Nunhead station actually, but I've walked from Crofton Park]

Plenty of angels in Brompton Cemetery and not as far out as many -f ew minutes walk from West Brompton & a few more from Earls Court.

I've been to Brompton, Highgate, Kensal Green and Nunhead.

Maybe the straight shot bus is the way to go. It can't be worse than the 3+hours I spent on Public transportation today. Eeek

Like I said in the other thread, settle down with a sandwich on the bus and it's fine. You'll see a lot from the bus if you like looking at urban London. The bus takes the modern roads that used to be Ermine Street in Roman times up to Stoke Newington.

Looks like the Overground still has closures tomorrow, right in the spot where you'd want to go. Unfortunate.

If you are going tomorrow (and the forecast is not good) you could go to the biggest of them all- Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey. You literally walk out of the station and you are there.
It is so big and so far out of London that there was a special railway (the London Necropolis Railway) ran funeral trains there, from a special station beside Waterloo (which you can still see the entrance of if you know where to look). The line closed due to WW2 war damage.
There was another Cemetery railway ran briefly from beside Kings Cross Station to New Southgate Cemetery. Arnos Grove tube station is closest now to that Cemetery.

Wow--special railroad lines! Sounds intriguing. I'd better keep an eye on the weather though.

I would say it's good umbrella weather at the moment. Not windy, quite mild, showery.

Ok, I'm now wondering how to find the entrance next to Waterloo. Can you please tell me?

Thanks very much! I can walk there, I'm that close.

Seconding Brompton as probably the easiest to reach - only a short walk from West Brompton station. For somewhat mysterious reasons it's now a Royal Park.

Thanks for posting this! Very interesting stuff. I'm going to watch the video he's linked to beneath this one.

@GerryM, I just looked up that necropolis railway station front...and I was several feet away from it on my last trip. I didn't realize it was so close to the Lambeth North Tube station! I'm definitely going to see it next trip.

Next time eh? You didn't make it to Abney Park either? Give that another shot next time too.

Oh, sorry! I did make it to Abney Park. And it was wonderful!

Two more Magnificent Seven cemeteries to go.

Did you take a bus straight to Abney Park? If so, what bus line that leaves from what station?
Thanks,
Rhonda

huggibear73 best you post your own query than hitchhiking on someone else’s post.

Also if you share the neighborhood where you’ll be staying it will be easier to suggest transportation routes…tube, busses, overground….

I ended up taking a cab, in utter frustration. I'm not the person to ask for transportation advice. Lol

what bus line that leaves from what station?

A 76 that you can catch at Waterloo to Stoke Newington Church Street - https://tfl.gov.uk/bus/route/76/?direction=inbound

Or a 73 that you can catch at Tottenham Court Road to Abney Park - https://tfl.gov.uk/bus/route/73/

On the train, take an Overground service from Liverpool Street Station to Stoke Newington on the service bound for Cheshunt - https://tfl.gov.uk/overground/route/london-overground
