As much as I would like to see both Castle Howard and Waddesdon Manor I will have time for one. The determining factor for visiting one or the other would be their art collections. Advice is appreciated.
thank you,
Lynette

What kind of art do you want to find? Which Great Masters? Paintings? Sculpture? Ceramics and Porcelain?
We visited Castle Howard in October on our way from York to Pickering and Whitby. It was definitely worth the stop. We did see some art, but didn't think the art was the high point of the Castle.
The properties are 200 miles apart, so which best suits your itinerary?
When are you visiting? Castle Howard is open year round, but Waddesdon is only open weekends until the spring and then, only 5 days a week.
The websites for both properties detail their art collections - this is a very subjective topic and you haven't given any details about your particular interest. I wouldn't say that either's art collections would be the main reason to visit.
Castle Howard is a 300 year old stately home, whereas Waddesdon was built in the late 1800s to show off the wealth of the Rothschild banking family, so they have very different histories.
First, thank you for the replies. Old masters, frescoes, medieval tapestries and manuscripts, French porcelain is what I would like to see. I am curious about the collectors - who began the collections, how the collections continued to grow.
Thank you,
Lynette
You should visit Blenheim Palace.
