Cash Machine in Lyme Regis

We were in Lyme Regis this past summer, and the only cash machine in town had been broken--apparently for several weeks. I've seen some reports since that it still was broken. We'll be back at Christmas for more fossiling! Although we made do this summer by changing U.S. notes in the post office (for a too-high exchange rate) and by driving to a nearby town (with several functioning cash machines), I wonder if Lyme Regis has managed either to fix the old machine or to acquire a new one. Has anyone been there recently and can report?

I don't know, mymac, but when I ran into the no-ATM situation in Mevagissey, I was told that a lot of the in-town merchants would give cash back if you made a purchase with a debit card. I managed to just squeak by, but that was my back-up plan, since my ATM card also functions as a debit card. I wonder whether that would be possible in Lyme Regis.

There are several ATM's in Lyme Regis, the main one being the Natwest Bank (not sure if this is the one you're referring to). There's also one at The Harbour Stores however if all else fails you can get cashback at the Tesco Express by making a purchase with a card and requesting x amount as cashback.

There used to be 3 bank branches in Lyme Regis, but they have all closed.

The website o use for the most up to date information on ATM availability is Link, who basically runs the underlying network infrastructure of all UK ATMs (there are also apps you can download). This shows currently 3 available:

ARTHUR FORDHAMS
67 BROAD STREET
LYME REGIS
DT7 3QF
Charge: FREE

SYMONDS AMUSEMENTS LTD
MARINE PARADE
LYME REGIS
DT7 3JH
Charge: £1.85

THE HARBOUR STORES
COBB ROAD
LYME REGIS
DT7 3JT
Charge: £1.85

All three are operated by YourCash ATM Systems Ltd

The shops / cafes could help by coming out of the 19th century and offering card facilities.

Just use your card at the Post Office counter and they'll give you cash - no need to exchange notes there.

I’ll be in Lyme Regis late tomorrow. I’ll play detective on Friday and post my findings.

The ubiquity of contactless cards apparently hasn't reached Lyme Regis yet ... unless they have learnt through this cash 'crisis'.

Claudia: Since you volunteered to investigate the cash machine situation in Lyme Regis, I wonder if you'd also be willing to take on another favor.

We'll be arriving in Lyme Regis on Christmas Eve. Tesco Express will be open till 10:00 that night, so we can pick up some groceries. We're hoping to grab lunch out on Christmas Day--but without breaking the bank. (The hotel Christmas Lunches are a wee bit pricey!)

We've eaten at Lal Qilla (61 Broad St.) and found it quite tasty. If you wouldn't too much mind popping in to see if they'll be open Christmas Day, I'd be grateful. If they are, please reserve a table for three under Campbell. We'd like to eat at noon if they're open then, but anytime after 6:00 p.m. would be fine, too. (We want to be out on the beach in the afternoon at low tide to hunt for fossils!)

Muchas, muchas gracias!

Wasnt volunteering and I've never popped.

Was being practical.

While in the area will need to get cash for the remainder of my trip. Wasn't going to get it at Heathrow and as I was driving didn't feel like stopping anywhere else.

Suggest you look online regarding Christmas Dinner. This isn't a holiday trip, I'm working.

Wow.
Mymac, you can call them yourself to make a reservation--if they take reservations. It looks like a very casual place.
And there is no place I see on their website to make a reservation. You can also ask them yourself what days they will be open over the holidays.
Their website says:
Telephone: 01297 442505 / 444602
The Lal Qilla is open everyday from 12 noon to 2:00pm and also 6:00pm to 11:30pm.

You could also walk by there yourself when you first arrive in Lyme Regis and inquire.

Seems banks are closing in many towns. Supposedly a means of encouraging online banking.

The only ATM I've found in Lyme Regis is the one at Tesco. Withdrew pounds without a problem.

As I posted earlier this fall concerning Mevagissey, that town dropped from three banks to none, according to locals.

Interesting Claudia. I was surprised that my usual ATM near my hotel in London was closed this year, along with the bank branch that it belonged to. The Hotel reception directed me to the Sainsbury's for the ATM which worked fine. I did not have extra charges when using it, the debit card I used there charges $1 per transaction no matter how much you withdraw and it was the same for this non-bank ATM transaction.

Sainsbury ATMs are actually all bank ATMs. They have the name of the bank over the top of each machine or on the screen before you begin. If it just says Sainsbury that would be Sainsbury Bank.

Tesco have a bank too.
