Hi, you all have convinced me that using a tapable credit card is the best way to pay for the tube and many other places. However, how do you securely carry the card while walking I can’t believe you fumble with a money belt or use a pocket. Thanks
It's in my wallet in my pocket.
I attach my wallet to a belt loop via cord.
I stick mine deep in a front pocket. No wallet carried any longer.
I have a wallet with an outside pocket for my "tap" card, and the wallet is attached to the inside of my zipped closed crossbody bag.
I use my phone with Apple Wallet, which is kept in an inner pocket in my crossbody bag.
ETA: I should add that any credit cards that I need frequently are kept in this minimalist wallet that I love. It's easy to access, I can fan them out and pick on, but they are secure in this tiny wrap. https://www.nomatic.com/products/wallet
A friend gave me a zippered wrist pouch when I was going to work in rural Guatemala for a few months. It looks like a sweat band, or a support band, easy to unzip to grab a credit card. I prefer the smaller size. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FSXG09O/ref=twister_B0B2CTFKQ7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Old school approach.
Use an Oyster Card holder obtained years ago at the British Library.
As I travel in Fall or Winter its secured in a zippered interior pocket of my raincoat. That way accessible but also secure.
I just keep it in my wallet like I do at home, and when I tap on/off for the tube I just take it out of my wallet, tap, and put it back, the same way I do at home. No reason to treat it any differently unless you're somewhere that's high risk, which London isn't.
I secure my phone in a zipper pocket in my crossbody purse that has an extra clasp to secure it a bit more. My credit card has been loaded into my Apple Pay. I think I only used my physical credit card once during a month in Europe in June.
My daughter has been using a Loopy on her phone for several years and really likes it. I bought it for my new phone before that trip, and it helped me so much to not feel like I might drop my phone, but I especially liked it when tapping it through the London tube entrance/exit to hold it more securely.
Have a great time in the UK!
I agree with Simon. I stick to my routine that I use at home, trying to get familiar with a new system or ways of paying while traveling is not the best idea. I just use a wallet, like at home. It is a smaller wallet as I just have my small cross body, but organized the same as my regular wallet.
Please don't panic about the risk of using a card in London. It is really very safe. My point of view might differ as a local, but I keep my card in my wallet in a front pocket of my trousers [pants]. I'll take my wallet out, take my card out, tap and put it away again.
On very rare occasions, on a very crowded tube train maybe, I put my hand in my front pocket just to reassure myself my wallet is where I want it to be.
If you're fumbling for your payment method at a busy tube station turnstile, remember to stand to the side to make sure everyone else can go past.
I have a small/med Baggallini purse I carry cross body. I carried my cc I used for all transportation tapping in an outer zipped pocket. The one card was in the little RFID pouch that was tethered inside the front zipper pocket of the Baggallini cross over purse. It was the only thing I ever had to remove from the 2 zippered area. Out it would come when approaching a tapping surface in London and the Netherlands. Back it would go when I finished the tap. There was no fishing around for cards in a place where there were multiple papers or cards. I used a card with no transaction fees and I didn’t have set up for any bill paying at home in case I lost it. It worked great and my system gave me some organization and peace.
EDIT: I used my regular cc for all other purchases that I tapped. It was kept in another slim cc holder that was tethered in the main compartment of the purse. It’s the way I shop and use it at home. It’s just me but I wanted to use a dedicated cc for transportation that is a cc I had recently gotten and didn’t have any other bill pay things affiliated with it.
We wear shirts with brest pockets that have a button and / or zipper. Just keep our cards and day money in a small wallet in one of the pockets.
Apple Watch works like a charm
