Carlisle >Settle> Leeds Train Line

We see the train line from Carlisle through Settle to Leeds listed as one of the top scenic train lines in UK.

We are traveling from Inverness for a two or three day stay in Keswick (bus tours of Lake District) then to York. (end of May, bank holiday weekend).

To take the train line we have to bus on 29th from Keswick through Penrith to Appleby to pick up train to Appleby>Settle>Leeds then connect to York. Appreciate any info on if this train route is worth the effort to get to Appleby? Other suggested routes ?

(we head from York to Harrowgate, then train to Manchester for two nights then Bakewell for two before heading to London )

If you are on the 1140 train from Appleby and have not yet purchased your ticket you could equally take bus #554 to Carlisle Bus Station at 0845, arrives Carlisle at 1008, and pick up the train from Carlisle at 1058.
The Bus Station to Train Station walk is well under 10 minutes.

But that timetable is also being amended- looking at the Traffic Commissioner's report- new timetable to be published probably about 16 March.

[Come back to us around that time]

If you route through Appleby be aware that the bus will drop you at The Sands (beside the river), outside the Methodist Church.

You have a short but steep walk uphill to the train station from there up a snicket path.

Also be aware that I am expecting the times of the bus #563 to change at the end of March. It is supposedly being extended on from Appleby to Kendal and will also call (more conveniently) outside Kirkby Stephen station. The new timetable is not yet available.

The train ride is totally worth it. It is scenic overload. That train normally has a refreshment trolley, stocked with local foods, and normally also conveys an on train guide as far as Settle, to point out the sites to you.

Its beautiful especially on the southbound trip.
Absolutely worth doing.
Appleby its self is notably a pretty place , the chippy over from the Co-Op gets my nod.
The station master up at the station gave me a free tea and theres a small shop/ museum too run by volunteers .
Cumbria has extended the £2 fixed fares on the buses too

The above poster has it right about the workout walking up to the station😀.
And to think the entire line was nearly scrapped in the 1980s

Further update- I have just got the new summer bus timetables for the Lake District valid from 23 March.

The X4/X5 bus Keswick to Penrith has been enhanced, as rumoured to run every 30 minutes.
So for you buses are now at 0820, arrive 0901, and 0850 arrive 0931.
The 554 to Carlisle is unchanged. Take the 0820 just in case.

For wider consumption the last weekday bus from Penrith to Keswick is now much later at 9.30pm.

I will be doing a wider post when I get home on the many other service enhancements across the area, including new frequent weekend services from Keswick to Aira Force and Ullswater, to Lowther Castle and to Howtown on the south side of Ullswater.
There are also huge service improvements to Coniston and Langdale, with early and late walkers buses, and a new weekend link from Honister to Cockermouth.

This is all from money released from the cancellation of the HS2 rail link
