Car rental with CC Insurance

Hello - i know the pros and cons or using the insurance provided through my credit card company, but my question is regarding the amount of deposit. I read some things that indicate that they may want to put a large hold on my card. I have a decent limit, but sure cannot have a $10,000 hold. I don't want to be stuck at the rental counter. Anyone have experience with this? Does it vary by car rental company? Should I just contact them? Advice? Thanks.

Avis has never asked to see any proof of CDW when I picked up a rental and I’ve never had a hold put on my card. I can’t speak for other rental companies.

We always rent cars overseas and domestic with our American Express card, and have automatic insurance with them. IT is not expensive. No holds.

Hello from Wisconsin,

I think I have had a $500 hold put on my credit card. I don't know for sure because I have never checked while I have been on the go. By the time I get home there is nothing there.

Not to scare you. I personally filed a claim and it was processed and it was paid quickly, no hassle. But read about the steps your Credit Card requires. Most credit cards are all underwritten by the Chubb Group. You might want to print out an outline of what the card wants in case of a claim. Things like a police report, and photos. My claim only had my written description of the event and the bill to have it repaired. I did have it repaired while we were renting it. A couple hours at the Opel dealership and the window was taken care of.

But if you have an accident you probably won't be thinking clearly. So have your outline handy.
