Will be taking train from London Marleybone to Oxford and it appears there are only two train stations there: can this be right? And only the main one appears to have car rentals within 10 miles: Hertz is at the station but $$$. Am I understanding this correctly? Is there any alternative closer to the OXF train station? Thank you for any help. You'd think this would be easy but.............

You're correct that Oxford has two station - Oxford and Oxford Parkway, with Oxford being the central one. In addition to Hertz, Europcar is also close to the station. Another option is Enterprise, which I've used to rent cars in Oxford - it's a short drive from the station, and they offer a free pickup and drop-off service.
I'm not sure you'll find much difference in pricing.
Where are you heading after Oxford? Just to note that it's not a very car-friendly location, but it makes sense if you're heading away from Oxford to somewhere where you'll need a car.

Thrifty, Hertz, Europcar are all near the main station as well as a couple of smaller outfits.
Not far away you'll find Enterprise, Alamo and more smaller ones.
They all vary prices according to the specifics so hard to suggest a cheapest option
