Would like to learn what the TOTAL expense, aside from fuel, fellow travelers have experienced when renting in England? I have confirmed valid car rental insurance coverage via my credit card for rental in England.
Appreciate your help!

A little more info will help: what are your dates, where will you be collecting the vehicle, and will it be a one-way rental or returning to the same place.

I'm renting a car for 18 days in England in April and I'm paying £810 total through Celtic Legend/Arnold Clark. That is the total cost and is for a car with manual transmission.

I'm also renting a car for one week (same trip as above) with Europcar in Cornwall. That is for a car with automatic transmission. That cost is £338.18 for one week.

In May of 2023 in Scotland, I rented a car through Celtic Legend/Arnold Clark for 16 days. Total cost was £736.00. The price was for manual transmission but they upgraded me to an automatic at no extra cost.

All costs above were for compact cars and I waived collision coverage per my credit card for all three bookings.

I haven't rented in England since 2014, so can't give you up to date info on your question. (car rentals have changed a lot since covid) I do advise that you really do your due diligence on what is required to us your credit card insurance in England. In the twenty years I've been traveling, I have really seen these agencies make it harder and harder to use third party insurances. Last time I researched using my CC insurance for a rental, they required an actual letter from the credit card company saying I had the insurance and dated within 3 months of the rental. It's best to be prepared and have what you need. They have the right to refuse to rent to you without insurance that meets their rules. (but will be happy to sell you their insurance which will be very high priced since you didn't buy it in advance).

I recently returned from the UK after a nearly three month stay . I rented from Arnold Clark / Celtic Legend . The total cost for the rental , a period of one month ( including ALL insurance , with a no excess (deductible ) buydown ) was 1,360.00 GBP . No other deal even came close . I prefer not to rely on credit card coverage for a variety of reasons , I always take total coverage via the renting agency .

Connie, I've been renting cars using a variety of agencies over the past few years (since Covid) and have never been asked for that. I'm not saying that some wouldn't require that, but if they do, they would have to let you know at the time of the booking and quote, which gives you plenty of time to comply (or find another company).

Other than parking, tolls and tickets ( which no one here can predict) what 'expenses' are you asking about?

We’ve rented through Costco a few times. Each overseas time the rental company was Enterprise. Fuel for a week will be nominal and will depend on how far you drive. When renting through Costco you need to get insurance at the rental counter if not using credit card coverage.

There are basic coverages up to a zero deductible coverage. There are also optional coverages to cover windshield or tire damage as well as road assistance. If you use your credit card CDW basic coverage then other coverages offered by the rental car company, such as zero deductible, will not be available to you.

As you are going to use your CC coverage, your total price should be £463.16. You will be billed in GBP so the total in USD will depend on the exchange rate at the time you pick up the vehicle.

Not sure when your trip is, but keep checking the rates. Since there is no cancellation fee, if the rates go down, make a new reservation, then cancel the original. I’ve done that on a few trips and each time the final rental price was about 1/2 of the original price.
