Car rental scams?

We have been able to rent cars easily in GB before. Recently, there is a rash of negative Google reviews regarding damage scams from previously reputable rental agencies like Enterprise. How prevalent has this become? We've been looking at Celtic Legend as well, but I am unfamiliar with the quoting process in regards to car hire.

What happened to fly over, rent a car, and go?

I realize last year is not that recent, but for what it's worth, I rented from Enterprise in Exeter the last week in Sept. last year and had no problems. I even got a small rock chip in my windshield and some light scratches from the hedgerows in Cornwall, but when I returned the car they said it was no problem, not bad enough to worry about. Maybe only certain locations have the bad apples working there?

The really bad companies to avoid are Green Motion and Easirent or Drivalia which consistently get bad reviews on Trip Advisor. They quote a lot lower than the more reputable companies but hidden exttras mean you often end up paying a lot more.

I've also had great experiences renting from Enterprise in Plymouth and Bodmin. Similar to Greg our car got really dirty on the outside and a little scratched up from the Cornish hedgerows and they didn't even blink when we returned it. Said it was not an issue and we never heard anything more about it. They also didn't charge us for the dirt inside the car from muddy shoes. We couldn't find a spot with a car vacuum to clean before returning, so assumed we'd get a cleaning charge, but nope! So I for one wouldn't hesitate from renting from Enterprise in the UK again.

I’ve never had a bad experience with Enterprise in any country. I do rent from the airport location rather than a smaller location, but that shouldn’t make a difference. The last time I rented in the UK was late 2022.
