Car rental return in Oxford

Hello All,

I've seen a few posts about the difficulties of returning a car in Oxford and understand that this is problematic due to construction on the Botley Road. From what I can see on a map, this construction makes it difficult to return a car and access the Oxford train station conveniently.

We are traveling in mid-September and staying in Blockley, and our next stop is York. We'd like to return our car to the Enterprise car return in Oxford (I see there are two options for this, one on Watlington Road, and one on West Way in Botley) and take the train from Oxford to York.

What would you recommend for car return in Oxford? Can we drop on West Way and get a cab to the train station in Oxford? Is it possible to get cab from that location? Or is it better to return on Watlington Road? Could we get a cab to the train station from there?Or would you choose another course of action entirely? Recommendations are welcome.

Thank you in advance to those who know the area or have experience there - your knowledge of the area is so valuable to those of us who need your help!

What about returning the car to Enterprise in Banbury? 10 miles nearer Blockley, much smaller and the depot is a 4 minute walk from Banbury station, which is the next station north of Oxford.

That was so complicated it made my eyes blur!

(John got in whilst i was checking maps)

Start again, you are staying in Blockley near Moreton in Marsh? It's simpler even on a good day to go to Enterprise at Banbury (Lower Cherwell Street, round a corner from the railway station with pedestrian shortcut). Shorter drive from Blockely and shorter train ride to York. But they can only take returns during opening hours. https://www.enterprise.co.uk/en/car-hire-locations/uk/banbury-u2q3.html?mcid=yext:245709&utm_source=yext&utm_medium=local

THANK YOU so much to both of you. Exactly what I was hoping for - local knowledge that makes the complicated easy! So much better to have your perspective than trying to make plans from 5000 miles away! Much appreciated!

Just adding this for info, in case it helps someone also trying to do a similar thing.

About three months ago, we booked a one-way rental through Enterprise from Bath with a drop-off in Oxford for about $650 for 5 days. Now, to book a one way rental from Bath to drop off in Banbury is over $1200 for a similar vehicle and time. Apart from the rising price of gas, and a surcharge for a one-way drop-off, I can't imagine why the cost is so much more. Since we are largely the ones paying for gas, it's hard to understand the excess charge. The excess cost is what makes my eyes blur! Oddly, a work van rental at Banbury is less than $300!

The alternative we've come up with is to take the train from Bath to Oxford and spend a couple of nights in Oxford. Then we'll take the train to Banbury and pick up a rental car there. We'll return the car to Banbury after 4 days - this will cost less than $300. This solves our problem and allows us to see the places we're hoping to enjoy during that week.

I don't pretend to understand the ways of car rental, so happy to hear perspective from elsewhere.

I haven't checked out the prices but Enterprise do have another site within direct view of a railway station in Oxfordshire at Didcot. This may help with a different rejigged itinerary.

Thank you Marco. Banbury is closer to where we'll spend our time in the Cotswolds, but I appreciate knowing where the Didcot option is located, should we plan to be in that area for this trip or in the future.

Yes I only brought it up after mention of Bath to Oxford by train as Didcot is a possible change point for that journey (or bypassed slightly to the west with the new limited direct service).

Hi Marco, I truly appreciate the information you shared. It's all helpful for those of us who, though we can read a map, aren't truly acquainted with the lay of the land or how things work. Though I'm working towards that, for sure - all part of seeking to live like a local!
