We’ll be spending a night in Windsor then renting a car there to meander around the Cotswolds then heading back to London for a few days. My question is, should we return the car to Windsor and take the train in to London (staying close to Knightsbridge) or should we try to get closer to our rental? We haven’t chosen a rental company yet so we’re flexible on that, based on price.
Yes, NEVER try to return a rental in London.
Trains, busses and the London Underground are your friends in and around London and in London neighborhoods.
Then return to Windsor or Heathrow?
You don't provide any info that helps us advise you on what seems best, and at
the end of the day you need to do some research to decide.
But, I would think that some factors might be:
- you can get any kind of car you want at Heathrow. Can you do that in Windsor? If not, then maybe you would backtrack a bit and rent/return the car at LHR.
- cost of rentals may vary between different locations
- London traffic is potentially miserable. I suspect you would not want to return the
car downtown if you're willing to take the tube (but you might if you planned to
take a cab, as the car is already paid for and the only extra may be the congestion charge).
I would leave the car in Windsor- it's very easy to get a train into London from Windsor. You could get the train to Paddington (via Slough) and then Circle line to South Kensington which gets you pretty close to Knightsbridge. That also saves you another night of the car rental.
If you'll be spending your time in the Cotswolds, you could look into dropping the car at Oxford on your way into London.
