Car Rental Recommendations - England, Wales, Scotland

Hello.

We are planning a trip to England, Wales, and Scotland.

The 2 options that we are considering is to rent a car in Southampton complete our trip to Wales and Scotland and then return the car to London.

The second option is to rent the car in Southampton and return it to Edinburgh and then take the train back to London.

I would appreciate any insights into either of these options, or for that matter, any alternative recommendations.

Is there a preferred rental company?

For rental car, take a look at Arnold Clark Car Rental. They allow one way rentals.. We used them for our Scotland trip in 2023. We booked through their partner Celtic Legend. Same car, but Celtic Legend included free GPS and 2nd driver at a lower rate. Both companies were easy to work with.

Where to pick up and drop off will depend on your itinerary. You definitely don't want a car in the cities, Edinburgh, for example.

Will you be staying in London on your return or just to fly home? If you're just catching a flight, consider flying home from Edinburgh even if it requires a connection in London.
