Car rental Newbury, UK

Hello everyone:

We are Downton Abbey fans and have tickets to Highclere Castle during our upcoming trip to the UK. We also wanted to see some of other filming locations such as Bampton. In our research, we have not found an easy way to use public transportation to do so.

Our thoughts are to take the train from London to Newbury. Then rent a car in Newbury, drive to highclere and on to Bampton. See the sights, drive back to Newbury, drop off the car and take the train back to London....we would rather not fight the traffic in London, which is the reason for taking the train to Newbury and renting from there. It appears there is an Enterprise Car Rental in Newbury.

Would love some feedback and alternatives...any other rental companies that have a good reputation?

There isn't car rental directly at the railway station, but there are three nearby in the town - Enterprise, Europcar and Caversham (a local company). I have heard the usual kind of hire car mixed stories from the first two and nothing about the third.

Thank you both for the information. We decided to give up the castle-only tix and book a day tour that accomplishes all of this. It is a bit more money but we felt it would be worth not having to stress about catching the train, then obtaining a rental car, driving on opposite side of the road, etc. With the tour, we can sit back and enjoy, plus the added bonus of a guide and commentary about what we will be seeing.
