We will be in London for four nights, Stow on the Wold for four nights, and Windsor for two nights all in the beginning of July. We are trying to decide if we should go back to Heathrow and rent a car there, then drive to Stow, or if we should rent from Slough and drop back at Slough when we get to Windsor and uber back to airport at the end. Our lodging in Windsor is very central to everything and we won’t need the car, but would it just be easier all the way around to rent from Heathrow and return there the day we depart from home? How bad is the traffic around Heathrow in terms of driving out? We have driven twice already for two weeks each in Ireland, but this will be the first time driving in the UK.

If the car hire place in Slough is close to the station then I would hire from there. It’s a straight ride on the Elizabeth line from central London to Slough. Going to Heathrow means getting to the airport and then getting a shuttle to the car hire sites, so Slough should be quicker if the base is handy.
The one thing to watch will be the opening times of the Slough office - generally many close on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. If that’s a problem then Heathrow is best.
